Per Staci Wilkes:

Friends, don’t forget we are in need of socks, shoes and clothes for the event I’m doing in Venice Beach for the homeless! They are in desperate need of these items and so I want to have the event either end of this week or early next week. Please go through your closets & ask friends/family members to do the same!  If you don’t have any items you yourself are getting rid of, then how about either making a monetary donation or going to the store and purchasing something to donate?  I know The Dollar Tree now sells socks and I believe even t-shirts. Ross also has cheap socks, underwear, boxers, etc. Please let me know if you have donations and I will arrange to pick up!  If you choose to make a monetary donation, my Paypal is: . Thank you!

For further information, please contact Staci Wilkes at (818) 912-1710 or Claudia Perez at (323)812-9836.

1500 in 20 days!

Angelinos,

As some of you may know, the City of LA has an emergency winter shelter program that runs from December 1st through March 15th. The objective of this program is to safeguard our homeless population from being exposed to low temperatures. The program provides shelter for approximately 1500 people.

As of the March 15, all of the 1500 individuals will have NO access to shelter, food, hygiene items nor clothing and blankets. Many of these folks will temporarily come to Skid Row until they can travel to different areas.

As light as the winter is in LA, the temperature still drops below 60 degrees at night, well until the middle of April. While this can be tolerable when you’re under a roof, sleeping under the stars on cold pavement is a whole different story.

Take into account that we also have a significantly high senior homeless population in LA; they often suffer from things like heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes, as well as other ailments. With little access to proper healthcare for these folks, sleeping in the cold can become deadly.

To aid our homeless brothers and sisters, who will be leaving the winter shelters, we will be delivering blankets to Skid Row on Monday, March 17th. We will also be delivering hygiene kits, as these folks will no longer have proper access to bathrooms.

We need your help!

Any blankets, sleeping bags, socks, beanies, either new or lightly used- but clean, would greatly help these folks survive until the conditions get warmer. Hygiene kits or individual items such as soap, small bottles of moisturizer, shampoo, hand sanitizer, razors, female hygiene products, and wet naps would be useful for people to not only stay clean, but to keep up their self-esteem.

Please email us if you have any of these items to donate. Anything and everything helps!

Thank you,

Mel Tillekeratne

Old shoes, new shoes, good shoes, bad shoes… any SHOES!  We all need them, we all want them and we all must have them.  Can you imagine not owning even one pair?

Unfortunately, so many DON’T have shoes, so they walk around barefoot and in pain.   A Good friend of mine, Blanca Villalpando, sent me a message about her concerns of a few homeless men she sees daily by her office in Downtown LA. She mentioned donating a few pairs of shoes to them so they wouldn’t have to walk barefoot in this freezing weather! Thanks to her, LAC9 will host ” Walk with Shoes on LA Streets.”  We will collect as many shoes as possible and give them all out in Downtown LA (Skid Row, Los Angeles).

If you have any old shoes laying around that you don’t need any more, please consider donating them by giving them to someone in need! We will be collecting shoes all throughout December and January.  On February 1st, we will go down to Skid-Row and host a shoe drive.  Everyone is welcome to volunteer- your help is much appreciated!

We have decided that, this year, we will be delivering Christmas gift to the children at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.  LAC9 wants to serve Children’s Hospital Los Angeles families who are financially unable to provide for themselves and their children during this holiday season. Having a chronically ill child has a tremendous impact, emotionally and financially, on the entire family. Let’s make a child smile this year by giving them gifts over the Christmas Holiday.

Children’s Hospital has a Holiday Donation Schedule, Suggested Holiday wish list, things they cannot accept and Toy Donation Guidelines.

We want to make sure we follow these guidelines to ensure that the children receive them.

Holiday Donation Schedule:
Children’s Hospital will accept our Toys on
Dec. 18, 2013 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

**Unfortunately, Due to infection control issues, they cannot coordinate personal deliveries of our toys to the patients directly** we will be dropping them off at the Hospital and let them know that all these toys came from generous volunteer of LAC9; anyone who wants to be part of this drop off can join us at the Hospital ♥

Suggested Holiday Wish List:
Below are the items that the Children’s Hospital needs the most for the holidays. (We appreciate multiples of the same gift in quantities of 30 whenever possible.)

-Generic coloring books
-Crayons
-Playdoh
-Bubbles (regular individual size)
-Uno cards
-Medical first aid kits
-Baby rattlers
-Gift cards to Target, Wal-Mart and Amazon

Things they cannot accept:
To prevent infection, they ONLY accept new and unwrapped gifts for infants, children and adolescents. Once they receive our gift, they sort and sanitize the gifts to further prevent infection. Furthermore, unwrapped gifts ensure that children and adolescents are given gifts that are appropriate to their age and developmental levels.

**Flowers, Edible Gifts and Holiday Treats
Due to their infection control policy they cannot accept these items**

Toy Donation Guidelines:
The Children’s Hospital appreciates the generosity of donors like us who help them continue their tradition of providing toys to the patients at key points in their recovery. Below is the criteria that they ask that we follow when making our toy donations to help them maintain patient safety and well-being.

*To prevent infection, they only accept new toys, books and DVD’s.
*They cannot accept stuffed toys or toys with small pellets or beans.
*Toys should be sturdy and free of any parts which may pinch.
* Please avoid toys which can break easily and leave sharp edges. (i.e. made of glass or brittle plastic)
*They do NOT accept or distribute toys that are designed to promote aggressive behaviors (e.g. toy weapons of any kind nor violent video games or movies).
* All craft materials must be non-toxic (e.g., markers, glue, paint)

If you want to do something nice this Christmas and help someone in need, especially a child, be part of this Toy Drive! We will start collecting the toys on Dec 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18, the day of drop off.

Thank you!
